Contributions Challenge 2:

Hello fellow schools,

Due to the May-holidays we are bit later with our contribution of challenge 2. But the class worked very hard so here are the results:

First, we discussed in class what good education and free time mean to us. We made a large mindmap and concluded that although some of the students not always think that school and learning is the most fun thing in the world, we are very blessed in the Netherlands that we can go to school! Free time is also very important, a lot of the students have many hobby's like soccer, hockey, volleyball, hanging out with friends en watching tv/youtube/netflix.

Second, we watched the documentary about Urmila Chaudhary that is made for the Dutch tv show 'Leven in de Frontlinie' with the title 'Meisjes als handelswaar' via this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J11TiPP1kS4&nohtml5=False

In collaboration with the English teacher, the students wrote Urmila a letter. Below you can find several of them:

Dear Miss Chaudary,

I 'm Max and I 'm 14 years old. I just saw your documentary about your life and the things you do to stop the kalamari systeem. I find the things you do for this children very special. Here in the Netherlands we also try to help as much as possible. In this letter i talk about some of my goals to help stop the kamalari systeem with you.

The documentary i saw really touched me. I felt really sorry what happened to those children who were sold so young as a child slave. I did not know that this is still happening in the world. After that i saw your story and what happened to your childhood. And still you look so powerfull in the things you do to stop the kamalari systeem.

Of course we want that there are no more kamalari’s at all. but as a Dutch saying says, a good start is the half work. I know that you save much kamalari’s and that is what I find so special about you. especially knowing what you have experienced yourself. Its horrible what they are doing to them Yet there are still many kamalari’s to save and i want to help you with that.

I do still have one a question, I know you have saved many children already but one of the biggest problems is that every day there are other kids still sold as child slaves. How do you want to stop that. If you have a plan i'm more than ready to help you.

Hope to be hearing from you soon,
Bye,
Max

Dear Miss Chaudhary,

I am Youssra and i am fourteen years old. I live in the Netherlands. I am writing you because i just saw your documentary about your time as a kamalari. I found the documentary very touching. That your own brother has sold you touched me the most. I have two brothers, and i can not imagine that they would sell me. When you became a kamalari you were only six years old. And you got free until you were eighteen. That means that you have not enjoyed your years as a teenager. It definitely was twelve terrible years.

I have a few questions for you. At the place where you was in the time that you were a kamalari, were you there alone or were there other kamalaris? Because i think that if you were alone it would be even worse than if there were other kamalaris. Not that it is suddenly nice to be there, but just that you don’t feel alone.

My second question is about your fight against child slavery. In the documentary i saw that you hold protests against child slavery. have you ever seen someone during a protest that you have seen during your time as a kamalari. So for example an other kamalari which also got free.

I got one last question. Does the time as a kamalari still effects you now. And i mean more mentaly than physcal. For example in the form of flashbacks or nightmares. I want to say one one thing to you. I think it’s very good that you fight against child slavery. Keep going like this  and hopefully many kamalaris will be saved.

Yours sincerely,

Youssra

Completion:

Hello fellow schools, all of the students wrote a paper to the jury. Below you can find a composition of them:

Dear Jury,

First I will introduce myself, my name is Merel Woudstra and I’m thirteen years old. I live in The Netherlands in Almere- Haven, that’s a very nice place. I live here with my father, mother and little brother. My hobby is running, and I like it very much. The name of my school is De Meergronden. I was born and raised in freedom, because Holland is a free country.

I’ve learned a lot from this whole project. One of the important things that I have learned is that not everyone has a good live, for example people in Nepal and other poor countries in the world. For me the most important eye-openers are:

- There are a lot of children in the world without any rights. The children don’t go to school, because their parents don’t have money. The children live in a slope without any services, for example: no water, no sewerage, and not enough food for the whole family. In this project we have learned that all the children should have right, like: right to learn, right to play, right to say your opinion.

- Some girls in Nepal don’t have any rights. Some girls have been sold to a landlord, because the parents didn’t have enough money to take care of all the children and therefore sold the daughter to the landlord. The child house slaves (Kalamari’s) work hard and a lot of them aren’t going to school and feel lonely, because they have nobody to play with. (Merel)

We’re started fourteen weeks ago with the project that you designed. Its really nice. We have already done two challenges. The first one we did was that we introduced ourselves. By the second challenge we could choose between a few orders. My group and i made a rap about war. Because we think that war is  the most horrible thing in the world. By making that rap i have learned that i have to be really thankfull that there is no war in the Netherlands. And to be thankfull that i don’t have to be  afraid that there are exploding bombs next to my house like other children in war zones. Because of this project i have learned to appreciate the little things in life. And to appreciate that i am  getting  loved by family. Just having a family is something i have to be thankfull for, because not every child have one. I can not imagine my life without having a house to live in and a bed to sleep in. And taking a shower whenever i want. But there are children wo do not even have a house to live in and  absolutely have no bed to sleep in. These children have to walk kilometers to get water. I only have to walk to the bathroom to get as much water as i want. I do not always enjoy going to school. But now i know that there are children in the world who would do everthing to go to school i should be really happy that i can go to school. (Youssra)

During this project I realized that we often forget how blessed we are to live in a country like mine. We have education, nutrition, a safe home and no wars. A poor kid that lives in, for example a war zone can only imagine what it’s like to live in a peaceful place like this. And we can’t imagine what it’s like to live in such a chaotic place where nothing is what it seems. It’s just so unfair. We have peace, they have a war. We get an education, they make shirts for 3 cents per day. We have an excess of food, their tummy’s are hurting ‘cause there isn’t enough food in their village. I also came to realize that this subject needs more attention. Yes, we knew things like poverty and wars are happening everywhere and all the time, but in detail? No. If we don’t know the cause and activities of a certain problem, how are we going to solve it?

A problem I’d like to solve is not having proper education. Without and an education it’s even harder to reach a brighter future. Of course, it’s hard and expensive to solve this problem, but I think it’s possible. First, you’d need volunteers to help and build the schools. The materials can be bought with raised money, but this is not the most reliable money source because you don’t know if and how much money you will get. If you have enough, you can get your volunteers and the materials and start building. Once you are done you will need educational materials like books, notebooks and pens. At last, you will need teachers. These can be local or foreign volunteers. (Roos)

There must be a plan to improve at least one of the children’s rights. I think i have a good plan for the children’s right that every child have to get education. My plan is that firstly, each country should have the rule that every child have to get education. Secondly, schools should not be built only in city’s. schools should also be built in poor villages. So that the children there also have a change for a better feature. With a good education they will get a good paying job. My plan will improve the lives of these children because they are having fun and making friends at school instead of working in the field or companies work. While the children are having fun at school they are also learning to write and read so they get a good job in the future. (Youssra)

Kind regards, Class HV2B - De Meergronden
